Sam Shiflett is a freelance Flame Artist based in Los Angeles. As a native Angeleno, he spent his youth playing fantasy card games and dreamed of one day going pro. Unfortunately, this dream abruptly came to an end after he suffered a career-ending injury during an out of town game. Armed with a pirated version of photoshop, Sam took to escaping the tragedy by making crude compositions of his friends visiting scenes from the X-files. This naturally led him him meandering through a stint in film school before ultimately landing an internship at a small post production house where he would trade in his improvised compositional skills for a more polished approach in Flame. Now, he’s amassed over a decade of industry experience, working with esteemed studios such as Mass Market // Psyop, spent two years as a lead compositor at the Moving Picture Company and has freelanced most recently for studios such as MPC, the Mill, Method, Jamm and Kevin. He’s worked with major agencies and brands leading small teams of other 2D artists and assisting many others to deliver the highest degree of work, accumulating a portfolio of beauty, cleanup, VFX, CG composition and motion graphics. He has a background in smoke and strong organizational skills, making him adept at any versioning as well as localizations. While he still anticipates his return to playing Magic: The Gathering professionally, he hopes he can continue to make more quality connections through his career in post production.
